The process of creating holes in solid materials using a drill bit is called drilling. Drilling generally occurs on a drill press or a lathe but can also be conducted on a boring machine or milling machine. The drill press is the primary machine tool for drilling operations. On a drill press, a drill bit is primarily used for hole making. When drilling on a lathe, the workpiece rotates, and the tool performs the feed motion. In contrast, during drilling operations on a drill press, the workpiece remains stationary while the tool performs the primary rotary motion and simultaneously moves axially for the feed motion.
