Metallurgical silica can be used as raw materials for the smelting of ferrosilicon and other iron alloys, in the chemical industry it is used to prepare silicon compounds and silicates, and can also be used as packing material in sulfuric acid towers; this dataset includes the entire process of silica mining and crushing and screening, as well as the fuel consumed by internal transportation. Tire wear is also taken into account, with a linear extrapolation based on the average tire wear of a typical open-pit coal mine in China (annual production of 34 million tons of raw coal). Production equipment, factory construction, and other infrastructures are not included within the boundaries of the dataset. Wastewater is also not included because, in the mining process, the main water usage is for dust suppression, which is not contaminated and directly infiltrates; thus, wastewater is negligible. The data inventory is formed by merging data from multiple sources and has been corrected and supplemented with partial data in reference to industry statistics, standards, and emission factor manuals; the open-pit mining and processing of silica include processes such as blasting, mechanical excavation, transportation, crushing and screening, and drying.
