Technology comment

The two main technologies for producing polypropylene are slurry and gas phase. In bulk slurry technology, the polymerization reaction takes place in liquid propylene in a tubular loop reactor. Catalyst and liquid propylene are continuously fed into a pre-polymerization reactor and then into a series of bulk loop reactors to form polypropylene particles. A small amount of hydrogen is added to control the characteristics of polypropylene. Excess propylene monomer is removed from the polymer particles by vaporization operations. The monomer stream is purified and recycled back to the reactor. Then, the remaining polypropylene particles are fed into an extruder for pelletizing. In the gas-phase technology, propylene feedstock is degassed to remove oxygen or other impurities. It is then cooled and sent to a dryer before being fed into a gas-phase polymerization reactor. A small amount of hydrogen is added in the reactor to control the characteristics of the polypropylene. The polymer is intermittently separated from the reactor through separators. Excess monomer propylene is recycled back into the reactor. Polypropylene is removed from the separator in powder form. These polypropylene particles are then sent to an extruder for pelletizing.
