Shanxi Province is a major coal province, with a wide distribution of coal resources, large reserves, full range of varieties, high-quality coal, shallow burial, and easy mining. Coal resources spread across 88 counties (cities, districts) throughout the province, covering a coal-bearing area of 61,800 square kilometers, accounting for 40.4% of the total provincial area. Coal resources are distributed from north to south in six major coalfields (including 38 exploration mining areas) of Datong, Ningwu, West Mountain, Qinshui, Huoxi, and Hedong, and the five major coal-producing areas of Hunyuan, Wutai, Fanshi, Yuanqu, and Pinglu. Shanxi Province has abundant coal resources and a full range of coal varieties, including lignite, long-flame coal, weak caking coal, gas coal, fat coal, coking coal, lean coal, poor coal, and anthracite in nine major categories. The ash content of the Taiyuan Formation is 6. 95~37.97% ash content, volatile matter 6.5~41.01, maximum thickness of plastometer layer 0~40mm, total sulfur of raw coal 0.68~6.65%, calorific value 7712~9078 kcal/kg. The Shanxi group has ash content of 8~35%, volatile matter 6.4~40.03, maximum thickness of plastometer layer 0~75mm, total sulfur 0.2~0.95%, calorific value 7400~8660kcal/kg. The Datong group are all weak coking coals, with ash content of 8.56~16.13%, volatile matter of refined coal 29.73~35.52%, maximum thickness of plastometer layer 0mm, total sulfur of raw coal 0. 49~1.93%, Qnet,ar net calorific value on received basis 7705~7946 kcal/kg.
